This edition is based on an early nineteenth century edition published in London by Paine & Hopkins who was active in London from 1821 to 1836. Another composition by Hummel published by Paine & Hopkins, the Rondo Villageois Op. 122, was entered at Stationary Hall on August, 31, 1831. Presumably, the present work would have been published in the same time frame. The piece is an arrangement of selected numbers from Hummel’s two Serenades, Op. 63 and 66. We do not know, and we have no way of verifying, if this arrangement was made by the composer himself, or perhaps this was an unauthorized expropriation by the English publisher, capitalizing on Hummel’s notoriety in England. It may be that this was one of the many works by Hummel that were pirated by many specialized piracy publishers in England, France and Germany.
This duo could serve as a wonderful addition to the guitar and piano repertoire. Needless to say, it would be a great preparastion tool for any performance of the original Hummel serenades.
